Amy Tan writes the literary reading Fish Cheeks, in this piece she speaks about how embarrassed she felt about her family and their traditions, when her family invites her crush family to a Christmas dinner. We all experience some type of crush as young adults like Amy and even though we are all different our families tend to do things that embarrassed us, in the reading Amy keeps thinking on what this boy (Robert) and his family were going to think about Christmas dinner not being like the typical American Christmas dinners and her noisy relatives. After reading the story I understood where Amy was coming from, the significance of the story is that you must stay true to who you are and not try to seem something that you are not. In the story Amy shares how her mother had all types of sea food cooking in the kitchen which is something you do not see in a Christmas dinner in a typical American household. When they sat down to eat and her relatives were licking their chopsticks and grabbing stuff from the table Amy was embarrassed, because she wanted to come off as well mannered to this boy whose family is used to plates being passed around the table. But what Amy failed to realize from the beginning was that all the food her mother cooked was her favorites; if Amy would have not been so busy feeling embarrassed, she would have seen her mother knew how important it was for her to seem this way and simply wanted to help. Her mother does tell her that no matter how American she wants to seem she always has to remember that she is different and being different is not something to be ashamed of, that is what I think Amy wants her readers to learn that not even a crush should make you ashamed of who you are.
