CASE STUDY:
Orange Motorway Services Ltd have recently acquired the lease to operate a motorway service station on the M50. The section of the land that the motorway service station is now built on originally belonged to a local farmer who sold the land at a favourable price to the National Roads Authority on the condition that he (the farmer) would be given first option on leasing the entire site and operating it as a fully functional service station. Following lengthy negotiations between representatives of the farmer and the National Roads Authority an agreement has been reached and Orange Motorway Services Ltd are now in the final stages of preparation to open for business. However, there are a few problems:
• The farmer has handed over the day to day operation of Motorway Service Station to his son and daughter (Jack and Jill) however the farmer (who is the 100% owner of Orange Motorway Services Ltd) has a very old, traditional view of how to run a business and manage staff and he maintains total control over all decisions especially those of a financial nature.
• The service station is due to open on the 1st of March and problems are starting between Jack and Jill and their father. As the service station will operate on a 24 hour basis Jack and Jill estimate that the total number of employees will be approximately 100 across all functional areas. Jack and Jill want to employ a specialist HR Manager but the father has said no as it will cost too much money.
• While Jack and Jill have a lot of enthusiasm they lack experience especially in relation to the modern workplace and creating an effective and efficient work environment.
• Jack and Jill both realise that they need help especially in relation to convincing their father that they need a dedicated HR person, particularly for staff recruitment and selection hence they have come to you for help.
You are a HR consultant and having met Jack and Jill you have agreed that you will provide them the following:
1. An evaluation of the HR Function within an organisation outlining the benefits and how the function contributes to providing a competitive advantage.
2. A recommendation of the staff requirements (including numbers and Job Titles), a draft of an organisational structure that you believe would reflect the most efficient and effective operation for OMS, and a sample of 1 x Job Description and 1 x Person Specification (you can choose any job role within Orange Motorway Services Ltd.)
• The following notes should also be considered:
a. To assist with this Jack and Jill have provided guidance; The father (Jim) will be the Head of the organisation, Jack will be responsible for all activities involving fuel/forecourt and external parking areas and the convenience store while Jill will be responsible for all activities involving the delicatessen/café/hot food counter and seating area.
b. Services provided:
i. Convenience Store
The convenience store is a traditional convenience store with the added service of selling fuel.
ii. Barista
The barista bar sells proper barista made coffee plus pastries only.
iii. Deli/Burger Bar
The Deli/Burger Bar offers different types of food.
Deli offers cold food/salads/sandwiches both premade and made to order.
Burger Bar offer traditional burgers, fries, hot dogs and pizzas.
Other items to consider:
• The seating area is open to all customers:
• It is the responsibility of all staff to ensure the seating area is kept clean, however, only convenience store staff work on the outside of the building in the forecourt.
• Convenience store staff and Barista/Debcili staff are not transferrable
