1.) Isabel Allende
Isabel Allende wrote the short story, “An Act of Vengeance”. Vengeance has been defined by many dictionary sources as, “punishment inflicted as retaliation for an injury or offense.” How does this concise definition refer to Allende’s short story and to the characters living within it? In a larger frame of reference, how does vengeance play out in the realms of Latin American violence and power?
2.) Sandra Cisneros
Sandra Cisneros wrote “Woman Hollering Creek.” Although this tale has many diverse interpretations, women’s issues seem to be highlighted. Gender, societal roles, stereotypes, and the geographic border between the U.S. and Mexico all appear as important aspects to be considered. Explain how gender and geography have mixed and intermingled in this story, leading to situations of domination/oppression. How does this tale foreshadow what is happening today at some points on our southern border where violence and power seem to have been unleashed upon so many?
